Johnny Gerard Plate, Minister of Communication and Information Technology, Republic of Indonesia

About the Speaker

Johnny Gerard Plate (born 10 September 1956) is an Indonesian politician and businessman who is the Minister of Communication and Information Technology in Joko Widodo’s Onward Indonesia Cabinet since 2019. Previously, he served in the People’s Representative Council for five years, and had been reelected for a second term in the 2019 election. 

He studied economics and business management and graduate of Atma Jaya Catholic University of Indonesia. In the early 1980s, he entered the business of agricultural equipment, during a boom in new plantations in Kalimantan and Papua. He later joined AirAsia and served as commissioner in several companies.

Johnny ran in the 2014 legislative election as a Nasdem Party candidate in the East Nusa Tenggara 1 electoral district, and he successfully secured a seat after winning 33,704 votes. During his term in the People’s Representative Council, he was appointed secretary-general of Nasdem in 2017. He was reelected in 2019 with 115,921 votes. On 23 October 2019, President Joko Widodo appointed Johnny as the Minister of Communication and Information Technology.

Charlie Isaacs, CTO for Customer Connection, Salesforce

About the Speaker

Charlie Isaacs has a track record of R&D leadership at companies like Verizon, Answer Systems (acquired by Computer Associates), Broad Daylight (sold to Primus Knowledge, then ATG and then Oracle), and Kana (bought by Verint). After Kana, he joined Alcatel-Lucent/Genesys as VP of Innovation. 

Charlie joined Salesforce in 2012 as VP/CTO for Customer Connection and claims to have “the best job at Salesforce” as he incubates customers worldwide onto Salesforce IoT and other emerging technologies.  Charlie holds a BSEE from the UC Santa Barbara and an MBA from California Lutheran University. He holds several patents related to CRM, the Internet of Things and emerging technology. He spends his free time volunteering at organizations that help women and underrepresented groups enter STEM fields. He has been married to his wife Paula for 38 years and has 3 children and 4 grandchildren.

Doubling Down on IoT for the Covid19 Response and Tripling Down for 5G

Abstract

The Internet of Things was a hot topic and gaining implementation traction leading into 2020. With the onset of COVID19 in 2020, IoT Use Cases have increased dramatically for connecting medical equipment, thermal image scanners, and even automated contact tracing. This latest surge is in interest will be quickly surpassed by the promise and widespread implementation of 5G. This presentation addresses both surges and how it’s all about the customer experience.

Vish Nandlall, VP Technology Strategy and Ecosystems Office at Dell Technologies, USA

About the Speaker

Vish Nandlall is the Vice President of the Technology Strategy and Ecosystems Office (TSEO) at Dell Technologies. In this role, Vish is responsible for identifying the technology inflections across DT’s six key domains – 5G, Data Management, Edge, Cloud, AI/ML and Security. His team builds and validates the North Stars for each of the respective domains and works with the Business Units, 

Strategically Aligned Business to ensure cross company adoption and implementation. A critical component of the TSEO office is ensure a tight alignment with the sales/presales organization to not only build insights into DT’s long term technology strategies but also provide forward looking thought leadership to the community.

Previously he served as CTO for Ericsson North America, where he designed their regional market strategy and technology roadmap. Foremost among Vish’s accomplishments during his tenure with Ericsson, he led the resolution of AT&T 3G performance issues plaguing the firm. He also organized a market-by-market analytics initiative, identified signaling and network design flaws, and rolled out features efficiently in under a year to move all markets to target levels of retain ability.

Vish Nandlall also developed and executed a plan to deliver five emerging business organizations, including Cloud, SDN, OSS/BSS, Video, and Mobile Enterprise. These businesses realized an annualized $2 billion in new revenue at a time when the North American market revenue was $9 billion total. This success hinged on Vish’s ability to develop a portfolio through R&D prioritization, an effective M&A plan, and management of the service and sales support recruiting and training.

Vish Nandlall began his career at Nortel Networks, where he started in 1995 by leading the design of the world’s first distributed call processing platform. Over the course of the next ten years, he went on to pioneer 10Gbps IP forwarding, act as a key contributor and author of the Verizon A-IMS specification, and even lead the industry’s first LTE trial system. In 2005, Vish was named Nortel’s CTO for the Carrier Network Group as well as a Nortel Distinguished Engineer for his technical leadership across the firm’s IP, optical, and wireless products.

Vish holds a Bachelor of Science in Engineering, First Division, with a focus in Electrical Engineering, from the University of New Brunswick. He has been published several times, holds multiple patents, and has been listed by Wireless World as one of their Global 100 Wireless Experts. In 2016, he was inducted to the “Knowledge Nation 100” for his contributions to the country’s innovation agenda. Global Telecom Business listed him as one of their “50 CTOs to Watch.”

He speaks regularly at conferences, and has recently presented on topics including,  “Building an IoT Strategy” at MWC 2016 and “Software Defined Transportation” at the 2016 NSW Transport Summit. Highly active within his community, Vish Nandlall has served as a director and policy chair for TIA. He also sits on the ATIS board, the FCC technology advisory committee, the Cloud Foundry board, and the EMC (now Dell Technologies) technology advisory board.

The Data Era of Networking Keeping up in the Zettascale Future

Abstract

As we look toward the future of networking and where our world is moving, there is one constant – the amount of data around us is increasing exponentially and we don’t see that upward trajectory faltering. Rather we predict that soon we will be living in a zettascale future, equating to some trillion gigabytes . With this evolution will come dramatic changes that must be managed at all levels of the network, thus we must already today begin anticipating the new requirements and resulting network infrastructure that will be needed. During this keynote, we will take a deeper look at the evolution of today’s networks, the trends that we have lived through in the past and what we see coming in the future, all serving as a foundation to define a vision of what the new data era of networking.

Mallik Tatipamula, CTO of Ericsson Silicon Valley, USA

About the Speaker

As a CTO at Ericsson, Dr Mallik Tatipamula leads evolution of Ericsson’s technology and champion the company’s next phase of innovation and growth. Prior to Ericsson, he held several leadership positions at F5 networks, Juniper networks, Cisco, Motorola, Nortel and Indian Institute of Technology (Chennai). 

During 30 years of his professional career, he has played a very unique leadership role in delivering industry’s most powerful innovations, standards contributions, products/solutions, design implementation of early real-world deployments working with telecom operators, and also innovating for the future, working with academia, by anticipating what might happen next, to accelerate the architectural transitions in the telecom industry. He has identified strategic opportunities, and implemented programs that have brought world-leading innovations to the telecom sector with a multi-billion dollars impact, launching over 50 products/solutions that are deployed in global telecom networks to enable these major network transitions from 2G to 5G.

Since 2011, he has been a visiting Professor at King’s College London. He is a Fellow of The Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET, UK). He has been elected as a Fellow of the Canadian Academy of Engineering (CAE) in 2020, and received Univ. of California, Berkeley’s Garwood Center for Corporate Innovation Award in 2019 for his outstanding contributions to the field of Telecommunications. And recently, he has been shortlisted as “CTO of the year” award by Total Telecom World Communications Awards (WCA) for the year 2020 and also “IET Achievement medal for the year’2020”. He has Ph.D. in Information and Communications Engineering from the Univ. of Tokyo, Japan, Master’s in Communication Systems from Indian Institute of Technology, Chennai, India and Bachelor’s in Electronics and Communications Engineering from NIT, Warangal, India. He mentored over 150 undergrad/graduate students, delivered 400+ keynote/invited talks/tutorials/lectures around the world, co-authored 2 books, 100+ publications/patents, served on 30+ IEEE conferences committees. He has been involved in developing industry-academia partnerships in Canada, US, UK and India for future technology innovations. He serves on several advisory boards including Global Semiconductor Alliance, Gartner/Evanta CIO Council, Digital India Initiative, London Digital Twin Research Center, and Chair for the Industry Advisory Board for Garwood Center for Corporate Innovation and Center for Growth Markets at UC Berkeley.

Application Aware Sensor Networks & Sensor Aware Application Networks for Smarter Cities and Smart and Informed Communities for the New World

Summary of Talk

Today, approximately 55 percent of the world’s population lives in cities. This will reach 68 percent by 2050, according to the United Nations. By the same year, the continued migration of people from rural to urban areas, augmented by the general growth of earth’s population, will see an increase in another 2.5 billion residents to the world’s big cities.

Premise of Smarter Cities & Smart and informed Communities
Managing the resources and operations of so many large cities can only be cost-effective and efficient if they are automated and connected – and this is the basic premise of smart cities. The creation of smoother and safer living through a gradual digital transformation is already beginning in some world cities, but it does not end there. Infrastructures, Streets, buildings, public and personal spaces, devices need to be interconnected as well.

Smarter Cities of the New World will include many new Groundbreaking city and community wide infrastructure initiatives which are being planned by Urban Planners, City Engineers and Architects for the New World, For example:

  1. Generate energy efficiency using renewable sources like Solar, Bio-fuels and Solid Waste generated from within the city to enable Green and Sustainability
  2. Enhance rain output in the city to improve water table and agricultural productivity – Circular Economy
  3. Provide clean air by drastically reducing Air Pollution by monitoring and controlling the environment

Smarter Cities will benefit from continuous accurate data available about the infrastructure and critical resource usage as the systems constantly process the data, provide actionable information & intelligent recommendations on efficiency improvements and optimizations to city administrators, citizens and their Remote Infrastructures, Appliances and Devices.

Application Aware Wireless Sensor Networks (AAWSN) are already enabling and enhancing a large number of pervasive computing applications and their circles of influence in Smarter Cities and Communities while in the context of Homes, Work, Production Facilities, Entertainment Facilities, Commerce Enablers and while on the move on Vehicles. Trains or Planes.

Despite the tremendous scales achieved in terms of robustness, reliability, maintenance costs, interoperability and other areas, AAWSN are still remarkably hard to program. This work addresses specifically the case of 5G-IoT based AAWSN and motivated by the need to facilitate the development of context-aware AAWSN Networked Applications.


This leads to lots of areas of Research and Innovation while transforming to Digitization to develop the End to End Eco-System in the new world of a CCC (Connect->Compute->Communicate) Pervasive  frameworks that allows the user to focus and orchestrate to specify the behavior of the sensing, networking, Application, and offloading the concerns with discovery, reconfiguration, adaptation, resource management, deployment and interoperability to the framework itself independent of the size, shape and physical location, type of a planned and managed Cities and Communities of the New World.
